My work draws on Colombian, Venezuelan, and U.S. cultural histories to explore migration, identity, memory, and belonging. Through photography, textiles, installation, and mixed media, I create layered visual narratives that connect personal experience with broader social, political, and environmental concerns. By engaging materiality and symbolism, I invite viewers to reflect on overlooked histories, question dominant narratives, and participate in conversations that foster empathy, critical dialogue, and collective responsibility.

Javier A. Lara is a multidisciplinary artist based in the United States. Born in Colombia and raised in Venezuela, he earned a BFA from Rhode Island College (1992) and an MFA in Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2003). His practice examines the intersections of migration, cultural memory, and identity through photography, textiles, installation, and mixed media. Drawing from his family's long-unspoken Afro-Caribbean heritage and his experience living across cultures, Lara creates layered narratives that explore belonging, displacement, and the histories that continue to shape contemporary life.

The main focus of my photo work is the study of the male anatomy. I also have a fascination for documenting architectural structures during my travels.

Through the use of Collage mix-media: drawing, painting, silkscreen... I map in dream-like layers of images as those in the works of Mark Shagal. The imagery in my work are full of social, political, and cultural narrative.

My Master's degree concentration was in study materials, I recycle materials that eventually become Installation/Sculptures to which I incorporate videos and performative elements.
